SM Megamall Apologizes After Security Guard Forces Out Flower-Selling Student

SM Megamall has issued a public apology following an incident where one of their security guards was caught on camera forcibly ejecting a working student selling flowers near the mall premises. The situation escalated when the guard destroyed the student’s flowers and kicked her after she attempted to defend herself.

In their statement, SM Megamall management expressed regret over the incident and assured the public that they had taken swift action.

“We regret and sympathize with the young girl who experienced an unfortunate incident outside our mall,” the statement read.

The mall management confirmed that the security guard had been dismissed and banned from working in any SM establishments. They also urged the security agency involved to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter.

The incident sparked heated debates online, with many questioning whether the guard’s actions were a result of following orders from higher management.

One netizen, Ralph, commented:
“You say that, but usually the guards are just following the orders of the higher-ups to remove them from the premises because they’ll ruin the image of your ‘Supermalls.’ You’re just using the guard as a scapegoat.”

Another commenter, Jan, voiced concern over the lack of due process:
“Sana macompensate both ang Guard at yung girl. They don’t deserve the media exposure, as well as the lack of due process for the guard’s dismissal. You don’t need to appease the masses with your statement.”

While the apology addressed the immediate issue, some netizens are calling for a more comprehensive approach to resolving such incidents. Many believe that systemic issues, such as management directives and training of security personnel, need to be revisited to prevent similar occurrences. Others argue that both the guard and the working student deserve support—be it through compensation, counseling, or other appropriate means.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by working students and raises questions about corporate policies on public spaces and treatment of marginalized individuals.
